Instructions:
For hoops smaller than 6x10 embroidery:
- Print the individual leaves and determine placement size.
- 12” x 18” is a standard size.
- Leave room for 1- 1 ½” borders.
- Once you’ve determined your placement, mark center lines, hoop, and embroider.
For hoops 6x10 and larger:
- Print out the embroidery pattern, and mark placement.
- Use the edit function on your machine to mirror the sides and top and bottom.
- Stitch out each section.
For each appliqued leaf:
- Each applique will stitch in the following order:
- 1. placement line
- 2. stitch down line
- 3. satin stitch line
- For each applique, lay the 2” or 3” square atop the placement line.
- After the stitch down line, remove hoop from machine, but do not remove fabric from hoop.
- Using sharp, curved embroidery scissors, clip around outside of stitches being certain not to clip the stitches
- Replace hoop in machine and stitch the third applique color.
Use built-in sewing stitches to decorate:
- Use decorative built-in stitches in your sewing machine. Spend some time playing with the stitches until you get one you like. Stitch across top and sides as pictured.
Stitch borders:
- Mark placement lines for your borders. You may make your borders as thin or thick as you wish.
- Stitch top and bottom borders.
- Fold back and press.
- Stitch side borders.
- Fold back and press.
Stitch backing:
- Lay same size backing fabric over front of placement.
- Stitch all the way around leaving a 2” opening for turning.
- Turn placemat.
- Press.
- Hand stitch or use steam-a-seam to close 2” opening.
Additional creative ideas:
