The Baby Lock Luna and Ursa include built-in yarn couching alphabet and crochet couching designs. Crochet couching is a technique that combines crochet with couching embroidery to attach thick yarns, cords, ribbons, metallic threads and more to fabric with small securing stitches. Use these letters and designs to create fun stitch outs that can be turned into all sorts of projects, including pillows. The addition of yarn to your embroidery ads a pop of dimension to your projects. Baby Lock Training, Education, and Events Manager Patty shares this step-by-step tutorial. 

• Baby Lock® Luna or Ursa sewing and/or Embroidery machine.  The Baby Lock Radiance with Upgrade Kit 1 also include the crochet couching designs.

• Embroidery Couching Foot (Y Foot) and Yarn Guide 
• ¼” Piecing Foot 
• Baby Lock Ruffling Foot BLA-RF 
• Thread Stand 
• 8” X 14” Hoop or appropriate hoop for created design 
• Multiple colors of yarn for Couching. Please refer to the manual for suggested yarns. For this project 3 and 4 weights were used.  

• Hoop the fused cotton fabric with tear-away stabilizer in the 8” X 14” hoop. 
• Stitch the designs using the embroidery thread of choice.  

• Hoop the fused cotton fabric with tear-away stabilizer in the 8” X 14” hoop.  
• Stitch the designs using the embroidery thread of choice.  

• Set the machine up for Embroidery Couching. Use Help Video and manual information for assistance with properly setting up the machine for yarn couching and calibrating the Y foot! 
• You will want to use the thread stand as well and will need to help manage your yarn as this is stitching.  

FLOWER DESIGN

• Select Embroidery.
• Open Category C for Couching Designs.
• Select Category 2 with the crochet couching designs.
• Choose design #4 and touch Set. 

• On this pillow design, the flower was duplicated to add three flowers.

• Once duplicated, align the flowers as you like.  

• By adding these first, it will sequence the stitch order so the letters can overlap if needed on top of portions of the flowers.

• Place the fused cotton fabric piece in the 8” X 14” hoop and attach to the machine.

• Please note: Couching designs can’t be combined with other embroidery designs but can be combined with other couching designs.

• Touch Add.   

• Open Category C for Couching Designs.

• Select Category 1 with the Fill Alphabet designs. 

• Bring in the letters for your name or messaging.  You will need to add each letter individually.

• Note that the resizing of all the couching designs is limited within the machine.

• Move and rotate the letters to layout the designs as desired. 

• Take advantage of the Multiple Selection and Alignment key to select and align the fill couching letters. 

      17. Once you have the design as you like, again, update the colors using the color key.  This will ensure that you have opportunity during stitch out to adjust the yarn and thread colors for the corresponding designs. 

•       Be sure to save the overall design to Memory.
•      Touch Embroidery.
•      For the flower designs, there is a layer of stabilizing stitches that just require embroidery thread.  Do not skip this portion of the crochet couching helps with the overall stitch out
  of the design.  
•      Be sure to remove the yarn from the Y foot when stitching those. You can use your +/- key to stitch all these out prior to switching over to Yarn couching.  If you do that, just make sure to use the +/- key to go return to the yarn couching portion of the flower designs.  
•      Then once that base is stitched, have your machine set up with embroidery thread and the coordinating yarn and you are ready to begin stitching.  Be sure to skip back over those previously stitched sections using the +/- key if you went that route! 
•      You will want to leave a yarn tail at the beginning and end to help manage the yarn.  One done stitching; the thread tails should be pulled to the back of the fabric.  A tapestry needle will help with pulling this to the back.  
•    Press the fabric and trim.

• For the ruffle, cut the fabric into 5” strips.  Sew the strips together and press in half.  
• Attach the Baby Lock Ruffling Foot to the Luna following the foot instructions. This is an optional foot for the Luna.  
• Ruffle the strip of fabric.  Making the strip extra-long gives you excess to play with.  
• Attach the Adjustable Zipper Foot to the Luna following the foot instructions.  This is an optional foot for the Luna.  You could also use the included zipper foot to attach the piping and zipper.
• Attach the piping to the trimmed pillow front.  Trim at the corners to turn the piping.
• Once the piping is attached, attach the ruffled pillow pieces starting at the bottom center of the pillow front. 

•        With the Adjustable Zipper foot attached, we also need to prepare the backing for the pillow and insert a zipper.
•        Piece the two back sections using a straight stitch about 2” at the beginning and end then switch to the basting stitch Q-5 through the center.
•        Press the fabric in half and pin the zipper along the wrong side of the pressed seam.
•       Stitch the zipper into place using the zipper foot and a straight stitch. Ensure the zipper pull is accessible inside the stitched area.
•       Once in place, use you seam ripper to remove the basting stitches and expose the zipper.
•       Place the pillow front and the zipper pillow back right sides together.  Use wonder clips or pins to hold in place.  Open the zipper towards the middle of the pillow back to allow for
  ease in turning.  
•        Stitch the layers together. Trim corners. 
•         Turn and press the pillow front.
•         Insert a purchased pillow form or use stuffing to stuff the pillow.
