Velvet Heirloom Christmas Stocking

Create a one-of-a-kind heirloom Christmas stocking for your fireplace mantel. This stocking was created using velvet but more simple fabrics can be used such as velveteen small wale corduroy denim etc. Enjoy the creative process using Designer’s Gallery Interactive designs to give your stocking a unique and personalized touch. Materials:

  • Christmas stocking pattern
  • Madeira Rayon machine embroidery thread
  • All-purpose thread to match fabrics and embroidery
  • Fabric yardages
  • Velvet for stocking body (unless pattern calls for more or less fabric
  • Velvet for stocking cuff (unless pattern calls for more or less fabric
  • Lining fabric for the stocking body (unless pattern calls for more or less fabric)
  • White grosgrain rib bon
  • Baby Lock Water Soluble mesh stabilizer (BLS - 500)
  • Scissors
  • Straight pins
  • Hand sewing needle
  • Contrasting sewing thread

Steps:

  1. Creating the lace pieces for the stocking: PEACE Snowflakes Poinsettias

    1. After creating the individual embroidery pieces for the stocking save the designs in the format for your embroidery machine. Then hoop two layers of stabilizer.

    2. Embroider your designs.

    3. Wash out the stabilizer in cool water and then wash out the remaining stabilizer using soap for fine fabrics. Dry the pieces and press with an iron.

  2. Christmas Traditions Interactive

    1. Open Christmas Traditions Interactive by clicking on your desktop icon.

    2. Click on the Christmas Traditions icon in the left toolbar.

    3. Click on Interactive icon in the top tool bar.

    4. Click on the Christmas Traditions Interactive icon in the left toolbar.

    5. Click on the “Pref’s” icon on the top toolbar to open the preferences dialog.

    6. Set the hoop size for your embroidery machine and click on Apply. ( N ote: check the size of the stocking cuff to know how large to make the PEACE letters.)

    7. Select Freestanding Background under the text box.

    8. Set the height of your letters.

    9. Select the Letters tab and type “ PEACE ” in the text box. Click Enter on your keyboard .

    10. Save the word “ PEACE” in the format for your embroidery machine.

    11. Hoop two layers of Water Soluble Mesh stabilizer and embroider the word PEACE.

    12. Snowflakes: Stay in the Interactive area where you just created the word PEACE.

    13. Click on the Snowflake tab.

    14. In the Points field click on Twelve (this will give you a more substantial snowflake).

    15. Set the size snowflake you want to make for the stocking. ( In the sample we moved the slider to the left all the way to set the size as small as it will go.)

    16. To make quick snowflakes click on Make a Random Snowflake!!!. Save the ones you like. You will need 4 snowflakes : one for the toe three to outline the heel of the stocking.

    17. Save the snowflakes in the format for your embroidery machine.

    18. Hoop two layers of Water Soluble Mesh stabilizer and embroider the snowflakes.

    19. Poinsettia: Click on the Bonus Designs tab and select the Poinsettia flower design.

    20. Set the size you need for the flowers. We chose to make two sizes of flowers. You will need two small flowers and one large flower.

    21. Save the Poinsettias in the format for your embroidery machine.

    22. Hoop two layers of Water Soluble Mesh stabilizer and embroider the poinsettias.

  3. Simply Trims Interactive: Cuff Trim and Heirloom Elements

    1. Open the Simply Trims Interactive by clicking on the Simply Trims icon on the left tool bar.

    2. Click on the Charms Tab.

    3. Set the edge to: Topstitched.

    4. Set the Top fringe setting to none.

    5. Set the trim length and spacing to the length that will fit your machine hoop.

    6. Slide the sliders until you get the following settings: Mid1: 8 Tip 1: 22 Mid 2: 1 Tip 2: 30

    7. Save the trim in the format for your embroidery machine.

    8. Hoop two layers of Wa ter Soluble Mesh stabilizer and embroider the trim.

    9. Heirloom Elements: Click on the Heirloom Element tab.

    10. Move the Piece slider to #2.

    11. Save the Heirloom Element #2 in the format for your embroidery machine.

    12. Hoop two layers of Water Soluble Mesh st abilizer and embroider the Heirloom Elements. (We used 4 Heirloom Elements at the toe of the stocking).

  4. Stocking Construction:

    1. Lay the stocking pattern pieces on the velvet going in the same direction as the nap. Lay the stocking cuff pieces on the white velvet making sure they are going in the same direction

    2. Cut out the stocking and cuff pieces.

    3. Follow the pattern instructions for constructing the stocking. When sewing with velvet pin the pieces together and hand baste to keep the pieces from slipping during sewing.

    4. Use the hand sewing needle and contrasting thread to baste the stocking pieces together. ( Note: The lining will not need to be hand - basted . )

    5. After the construction of the stocking has been completed hand stitch the word Peace on the cuff as well as the snowflakes and heirloom pieces on the toe and heel of the stocking.

    6. Pin the poinsettias in place and hand stitch them in the center of the stocking.

    7. Stocking hanger: Fold the 6” of white grosgrain ribbon in half and sew on the seam of the stocking.
