General Notes before getting started:
For experienced sewists, the embroidery can be done prior to creating the fabric tie. If you are new to sewing, it will be best if you construct the tie following the instructions below. This is because the placement of the designs needs to be far enough from the bottom of the fabric edge so as not to get cut off when the 45-degree angle gets cut in the construction process.
Preparing the fabric, Step 1:
Seam allowances are ½” throughout. Cut a strip of fabric 15” wide by 47” long. Fold fabric in half lengthwise with RST (right sides together) and pin or clip the long edges together. Using a ruler, mark a 45-degree angle on each of the two ends of your fabric, making sure that you make the longer side of the angle for both ends on the same side. Mark the center of the open long edge of the fabric. Then make another mark 3” away from the center point on each side of the center. This will be the opening for turning our tie.
Sewing, Step 2:
Begin stitching at the folded edge of the fabric using a ½” seam allowance and stitch on the drawn 45-degree angle. Continue stitching by turning the corner and sewing to the 3” mark that was marked in step 1 above. Leave opening and begin stitching again, backstitching to reinforce the seam and continue around the rest of the tie, turning the corner and stitching on the marked 45-degree line just like you did on the other side. Trim the corners of your stitched fabric close to the stitching, taking care not to cut into the stitching. Turn right side out and press. Close the opening by hand stitching or with a straight stitch on your sewing machine, stitching close to the edge in matching thread.
Embroidery, Step 3:
Select a monogram and stitch on one end of the sash making sure that the bottom of the stitching doesn’t go below 2” from the bottom. Repeat on the opposite side of the sash with another initial or with a design of your choice. For the sample, I used Design #14 for the side opposite the Monogram.
Finishing your Project, Step 4:
Finish up by centering the sash and tying it in place on your wreath.
