Supplies

Baby Lock quilting and sewing machine
7” x 7” square batting
Marking pen
Ruler
Rotary Cutter
Scissors
Baby Lock ¼”  quilting foot
Coordinating Thread

Fabric Requirements

Fabric A – (2) 3” x 3” squares

Fabric B – (2) 3” x 3” squares

Background – (5) 2” x 2” squares

Backing – 7” x 7” square

Binding – (1) 2 ½” x 24” strip cut on the bias

Instructions

1. Pair together 1 each Fabric A and B squares, right sides together. Draw a diagonal line, from corner to corner, on the back of each Fabric A square.

2. Sew ¼” from both sides of the drawn line.

3. Cut along the drawn line to make (2) half square triangles (“HSTs”).

4. Open and press seam toward Fabric A. Do Not Trim.  You will have a total of 4 HSTs.

5. Take (2) HSTs and draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, on the wrong side of each - perpendicular to the seam.

6. Pair the marked HSTs with the unmarked HSTs, right sides together, so that the opposite color fabrics are touching.

7. Sew ¼” from marked line, on both sides.

8. Cut along the marked line.

9. Open and press seam in either direction. Trim to 2" x 2" square.  You will have a total of 4 hourglass blocks.

10. Lay out the 2" background squares and hourglass blocks according to the pattern diagram.

11. Sew together in rows. Press in direction of arrows shown on pattern. Sew rows together to complete your block.

12. Make a quilt sandwich with your backing, batting and top. Lightly spray baste together. At this point, you can quilt this any way you like. Straight line stitching or free motion quilting would look great.

13. Once quilted, it’s time to round the corners of the coaster before binding. You can use a circle ruler or any circular object you have to do this. For example, a coffee cup. Place your circle object on one background corner and mark the curve from the edge of one hourglass block to the next. Mark all 4 background corners only.

14. Cut on the drawn curve line. Do not cut into the hourglass blocks. Bind with bias cut strip.

NOTE: after sewing the binding to the top of your coaster, clip the curve all the way around to the stitching line. Careful not to cut over the stitching line.  This helps the coaster lay flat. Then fold the binding to the back of the coaster and stitch in pace.

You're already done! Great work.
