Fabric Requirements:
Fabric A – 1 yard
Background – 1 yard
Backing - 2 ¾ yards
Binding - ½ yard 

Cutting Instructions:
Fabric A     
Cut (1) 7" x WOF strip -  subcut (4) 7" x 7" squares
Cut (1) 6 ½" x WOF strip - subcut (6) 6 ½" x 6 ½" squares
Cut (8) 2 ½"x WOF strips

Background
Cut (2) 7" x WOF strip - subcut (4) 7" x 7" squares and (7) 6 ½" x 6 ½" squares
Cut (8) 2 ½" x WOF strips

Binding
Cut (5) 2 ½” x WOF strips

Making Half Square Triangles:

1. Pair one 7" background square and one 7" Fabric A square, right sides together. (Fig. 1)

2. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the back of Background square. Sew ¼” from drawn line, on both sides. (Fig. 2)

3. Cut on the drawn line. This will give you 2 half square triangles (HST). (Fig. 3)

4. Open and press toward Fabric A. (Fig. 4)

5. Trim to 6 ½" square. Repeat to make a total of 8 HSTs. You will have 1 left over.

6. Sew HSTs, background and Fabric A pieces into rows following the block assembly diagram. Press seams in direction of arrows.

7. Sew rows together. Press seams toward top of block.

8. Strip Set A. Sew (2) Fabric A and (2) Background strips together - alternating colors. Press toward Fabric A. Make 4 strip sets. Strip set measure 8 ½"wide.

9. Cut (1) 24 ½" x 8 ½" piece from each strip set for a total of 4 pieces.

10. From remaining strip sets, cut a total of (16) 2 ½" x 8 ½" pieces.

11. To form 16 patch block, take (4) 2 ½" pieces from step 5. Arrange into 4 rows. Rows 1 and 3 start with a background and Rows 2 and 4 start with Fabric B. Sew rows together. Make (4) 16 patch blocks. Press seams open.

12. Lay out Strip Set A so that Fabric A is at the top. Sew (1) 16-patch block to each side of one Strip Unit. NOTE: On the left side, the 16 patch block starts with Fabric A in top left corner. On the right side, 16 patch block starts with background facing top left corner. (Make 2)

13. Sew 1 Strip Unit to the left and right of sailboat block. NOTE: Background faces inside toward sailboat, and Fabric A is on the outside. Press towards Strip Unit.

14. Sew 1 Strip Unit with 16 patches to the top and bottom. Press towards strip unit. NOTE: Background faces inside toward sailboat, and Fabric A is on the outside.

15. You’re done! Baste, quilt and bind in your preferred method.
