How to Make a Scalloped Bunting Banner
There is always a reason for celebration! Creating a fun, unique sewn banner can make those festivities even more special. We are elevating a project from Dana Willard of MADE EVERYDAY who is one of our lovely Baby Lock Ambassadors. We love this project and using her free pattern to make it unique using the built-in features on the Baby Lock Luna! Supplies
- Baby Lock® Luna sewing and embroidery machine
- ¼” piecing foot BLSO-QGF
- Optional – Baby Lock Binding Foot BLSA-QBF
- Scalloped Bunting/Garland Banner by Dana Willard, MADE Everyday
- Free downloadable pattern
- Free YouTube Video for traditional pattern
- Fabric used for this project was from the Creating Memories Collection by Tildas World.
- For the fabric measurements, refer to the pattern requirements. This also will vary based on the number of pennant pieces you want to create for your bunting.
- Binding Fabric, pre-packaged binding or ribbon trim could all be used for attaching the bunting together.
- Baby Lock Fabric Fuse Interfacing
- Baby Lock Tear-Away Firm Stabilizer BLT-103 (for Embroidery)
- Madeira® Aerofil thread to match fabric for sewing
- Madeira® Rayon or Polyester thread for embroidery
- Pinking shears
- Hera marker or another turning tool
- Rotary cutter, mat, and ruler
- Iron, pressing mat
- Basic sewing supplies such as needles, pins, wonder clips, scissors, etc.
Instructions
The fabric requirements, cutting instructions and pattern instructions are all included with the Scalloped Bunting Pattern. For this project, I used the large size pennant pieces and mixed fabrics for the front of the scallops.
To take advantage of the Luna’s sewing and embroidery feature, several of the bunting pieces were stitched on. Then every other scalloped bunting piece was left plain to fill in the gaps. For the embellished pieces, the following features were used:
- Character and Decorative Stitches and Tapering Stitches – Lines were marked 1” apart on the semi-circle of the bunting. The Guideline Marker on the Luna was used to help keep the stitches lined up.
- Embroidery Designs – The Luna and Ursa have some fun, new embroidery designs. This butting using one of the birthday goose designs to add fun to the bunting piece. These were placed using the 2-point placement feature on the Luna.
- Built-in Fonts – Large Letters- One of the large letter fonts were used to stitch out the word “one”. Since using the large letters, the alignment key on the Baby Lock Luna helped to get them lined up straight.
- Curve Sewing- Sewing curves is a breeze using this new feature on the sewing side of the Luna. These scalloped pieces were so easy to manage!
- Other options – There are limitless ways to customize a banner for any event
- Use one of the 914 Built-in designs including:
- Baby Lock Exclusives
- French Knot designs
- Built-in Fonts or large letters
- Yarn Couching Fill Alphabet
- Crochet Couching or Crochet Lace Designs
- Embroidery Motif Stitches
- Matrix copy to repeat a pattern
- Applique Feature
- Use the outline designs and watercolor them in with specialty pencils.
- Import you own designs via USB or transfer them wirelessly to the Luna.
- Over 791 Utility and Character and Decorative Stitches
- 30 New Character and Decorative Stitches
- 20 Tapering Stitches
- Stitch Stepping on Character and Decorative Stitches
Note: Any of the pieces with stitching had a layer of Baby Lock Fabric Fuse or a lightweight fusible applied to the wrong side of the fabric prior to any stitching. For embroidery, Tear-Away Firm stabilizer was also used to help manage the stitching on pennants.
Embellishing your Scalloped Bunting Pieces
Character and Decorative Stitches and Tapering Stitches
- Lines were marked 1” apart on the semi-circle of the bunting. The Guideline Marker on the Luna was used to help keep the stitches lined up.
- Thread the machine with embroidery thread of choice. Switch the recommended N foot for stitching.
- Choose a stitch from the Character and Decorative Stitch options or Stitch Tapering.
- Use the External Guideline Market to help align the stitches with the marked lines.
- Stitch out your stitch of choice.
- Repeat for the other marked lines alternating threads and stitches.
- Once completed, set aside for pennant construction and complete stitches on another pennant if desired.
- Using the Editing tools on the Luna, size, move, rotate or mirror the design. You can even edit the colors of the design using the Color Key.
- Touch Embroidery
- Utilize the 2-Point Placement option on the Luna to get your design perfectly placed.
- Once placed, stitch out the design following the machine prompts.
- For this bunting pennant, one of the geese was mirrored to give it a different look on the banner.
- Once done stitching, remove any of the Tear-Away stabilizer.
Embroidery Designs
- The Luna and Ursa have some fun, new embroidery designs. This butting using one of the birthday goose designs to add fun to the bunting piece. These were placed using the 2-point placement feature on the Luna.
- Mark the center point of the pennant for placement.
- For the embroidery, if you have pre-cut the patterns, you can float the fabric to the hooped stabilizer. This would also be a good time to utilize a stick-tear stabilizer. Otherwise, you could hoop the entire piece.
- For this embroidery, the 5” X 7” included hoop was a great option for the pennant piece.
- Touch Embroidery from the HOME Screen.
- Select the design of choice. This cute goose design can be found in the Baby Lock Exclusives.
Built-In Fonts: Large Letters
- A large letter font was used to stitch out the word “one”. Since using the large letters, the alignment key on the Baby Lock Luna helped to get them lined up straight.
- Try using any font. Set up the design and then use the placement and embroidery techniques mentioned above to embroider out the letter.
- This was the center pennant for scalloped bunting since it was for a Silly Goose 1st Birthday Party.

Sewing the Scalloped Bunting Pieces
- Set up the machine for sewing.
- Thread the machine.
- Attach the J foot to the machine.
- Wind the bobbin with the same thread as used for the upper thread.
- Set to machine to a center needle stitch and use the edge of the J Foot to create your seam.
- Engage the Curve Sewing features as you are sewing the curved edges of the bunting together Once established, place the fabrics right sides together and sew the curved together using a 1/4” seam allowance.
- Trim the curved edges with pinking shears and turn. Press the scalloped bunting piece flat.
- Once pressed, layout your scalloped bunting pieces in the order you want.
- For this project, I created my own binding piece to attach the bunting pieces to. Follow the pattern instructions that Dana provides.
- Pin the pieces inside the folded binding strip and using a straight stitch, attach the layers all together.
