Vintage Toile Stocking

Create this stocking by using the sewing and embroidery features on the Radiance. This project was a result of a simple request from my daughter.  Her grandmother had gifted her this green toile fabric that was leftover from some bedroom décor.  She wanted to utilize this fabric to have some stockings made for her apartment.  I loved the idea of finding a useful way to repurpose extra fabric from a duvet cover and bedskirt and was able to make a set of 4 stockings!  This would be fun to create using old table cloths or remnants of home décor fabric in your stash.   Adding a bit of personalization made these even more classy!

Getting Started:

1. To get started, print, and assemble the included stocking pattern.  Trim away the excess paper.

2. For the pattern pieces, you can either cut the front and back pieces separately so that you can fussily cut the pieces.  Or fold your fabric, right sides together and cut 2 pieces at a time.  Just remember that you want to ensure that you have two pieces in opposing directions.

3. Repeat this step for the lining fabric and Ultra Soft Fusible Stabilizer as well.

4. Fuse the Ultra Soft Fusible to the wrong side of the two stocking front pieces.

Note: These stockings did not have a cuff, you could certainly modify the pattern to add that at the top or add a separate cuff all together.

Instructions:

1. Let’s personalize the stockings using the built-in Fonts in the Radiance.

2. On the 2 stabilized front pieces, mark approximately 4” below the top edge of the stocking.  Mark the center point as well.

3. Hoop a piece of Tear-Away Firm in the 5” X 7” hoop.

4. Float the front piece of the stocking, aligning the markings with the notches on the hoop.  Using this method, you can stitch out 2 names in one hooping.

5. Pin or spray baste the stocking front to keep it secured to the stabilizer.

6. On the Radiance, select the Built-in Font Category.

7. The Baby Lock Exclusive Font was used for these stockings, but you could choose any of the fonts in the category.

8. Use the Font Preview features to audition the different font styles if needed.

9. Set the points for the font to around 40 points.

10. Type in the name using upper- and lower-case tabs.

11. Adjust the size and spacing of the font to be the desired size based on the name.

12. Once happy with your layout, touch SET.

13. On the Embroidery Edit screen, use the built-in Projector or the Camera scan to assist with placing the name.  Use the marked line as your guide. Remember when using the Projector and built-in fonts, you will want to change the projector background color to ensure that the design can be seen.

14. Touch Embroidery.

15. Thread the machine and stitch out the design.

16. Repeat this process for all the stocking fronts.  Again, be sure that your stockings are all going in the same orientation so when completed they will hang in a coordinated direction.

17. Once stitched, remove from the backing, and the water-soluble markings.

Assemble the Stocking:

1.Remove the Radiance embroidery foot and set-up the machine for sewing

2. Select stitch 1-03.

3. Press and fold the 2” X 8” strip in half.  Double fold the strip and top stitch.

4. Cut the sewed strip to approximately 4”.

5. Fold and place in the seam for the back of the stocking & lining.

6. Attach the label to the lining for the inside back lining piece.

7. Sew the top of the lining to the tops of both the stocking front and back.

8. Sew the front and the backs together leaving an opening in the lining for turning

9. Trim and press where needed before turning the stocking inside out.

10. Turn and press.

11. Fold and pin the opening in the lining and top stitch to close.

12. Press the stocking.

13. Attached a bow to the tab if desired.
