Steps:
-
Note: If using overlock only serger you will need a sewing machine to do quilting.
-
Note: If using an overlock& coverstitch serger like Triumph or Ovation optional Open Toe Foot and extension table are helpful.
-
Construction of Blocks: Create each block using 3 ‘tie’ fabrics and 2 background fabrics.
-
Seam one: Place one piece of background right side up then fold one tie fabric in half lining raw edges along top side of background fabric fold in center.
-
Place a piece of tie fabric on top right side down. (So now you have a sandwich of the background fabric on the bottom folded tie fabric in the center and tie fabric on the top.)
-
Looking at this ‘sandwich’ serge down the right side.
-
Open up and you have half the block.
-
-
Seam two: Take the folded piece that is sewn in the center and lay a piece of background fabric on bottom this folded piece in the center and tie fabric on top.
-
The ‘sandwich’ is made exactly the same as you did the first time!
-
Serge it the exact same way!
-
Now you will have the piece of folded tie fabric with two pieces of fabric on each end of it.
-
-
Seam three: The center fabric forms a pocket.
-
Take a small amount of stuffing and put into the pocket.
-
Nest the center seams (facing different directions) so they butt together for less bulk.
-
Clip the fabrics together to hold in place.
-
Carefully serge across this seam stopping and adjusting as you go to make sure you do not miss catching the pocket piece at each end.
-
-
Open it up and you have your first dimensional bow tie block.
-
Make the next 11 blocks the same way for a total of 12 blocks to create this baby blanket.
-
Serge 3 blocks together in 4 rows to create quilt top. Press seams flat & set aside.
-
Serge the four 2 ½” strips together to create one long piece. Press lengthwise in half wrong sides together and set aside.
-
Putting it together: Lay backing on cutting table wrong wide up.
-
Lightly spray with temporary spray adhesive.
-
Lay batting on backing.
-
Lightly spray and add quilt top on top right side up.
-
Pin well using pins or safety pins as desired.
-
Quilt as desired using a regular sewing machine with free motion or line quilting.
-
For this sample we used the chain stitch open toe foot and extension table (for ease of quilting) stitching lines as desired.
-
Triumph setup for quilting—see threading chart--C2 needle L 3.5.
-
-
Finishing: After quilting is finished square up quilt.
-
On the right side of the quilt along bottom edge with raw edges together attach binding to the quilt using same 3-thread narrow serge as used for making blocks.
-
Fold binding to the back then finish using your favorite method.
-
For this sample the binding is whip stitched in place by hand.
-
-
Your dimensional bow tie blanket is now complete.
