Paper Pieced Elephant Quilt

This adorable elephant quilt is sure to be the center of attraction in your home. Using your paper piecing skills and your Baby Lock sewing machine you are sure to have fun creating this project. Materials:

• The Elephant and I Quilt and Pillow Pattern by Jennifer Sampou for Stash
• 1 Yard each of an assorted group of fabrics from Mary Fons India Collection
• Backing fabric
• Madeira® Cotona thread for piecing
• Madeira Quilting Thread
• Batting
• Machingers Quilting gloves
• Fusible web
• Rotary cutter and mat
• ¼” Straight edge ruler for quilting
• Temporary spray adhesive
• Basic sewing supplies

Tools:

• Baby Lock® Tiara Quilting Machine
• Baby Lock sewing machine

Steps:

1. Read all of the pattern directions before you begin the project. Follow the directions from the pattern for the (elephant only) starting on Page 7.

   1. Tip: When you are instructed to press first press the pieced unit flat to set the seam then open the patch pressing from the front.

   2. You may want to reduce or eliminate the use of steam for pressing these papers pieced blocks. Steams tend to curl the patterns.

2. Cut one section for the background that measures 26 ½” x 16 ½”.

3. Apply the fusible web to the backside of the elephant while following the manufacturer‘s directions.

4. Center the elephant unto the background section and press.

5. Appliqué the elephant onto the background fabric using your favorite appliqué stitch. In the sample a satin stitch was used.

6. Cut 4 2” wide strips across the width of the fabric for the sashing.

7. Sew the strips to the top and bottom edges. Then sew two strips to the sides.

8. Make a sandwich with the backing fabric batting and ending with the elephant section.

9. To hold the sections together during quilting lightly spray between the layers with the temporary spray adhesive.

10. Set up the Tiara for quilting:

    1. Place a drop of oil in the bobbin case.

    2. Wind a couple of bobbins with the same thread that will be used for quilting.

    3. Place the bobbin in the bobbin case.

    4. Thread the machine.

    5. Have the ¼” straight edge quilting ruler close to the Tiara.

    6. Adjust the tensions as needed.

11. Slide the gloves on your hands. These will help you to move and manipulate the quilt easily during the quilting process.

12. Quilt the elephant first using the straight edge quilting ruler. Rest the edge of the ruler next to the foot on the Tiara.

    1. The first row of stitches should be placed in the ditch use the edge of the foot and the ruler to channel quilt the surface of the elephant.

    2. Move the ruler a ¼” away from the first line of stitching and continue on with the quilting process.

13. Free motion quilt around the elephant to finish the quilting process. In the sample a stippling stitch was used.

14. Trim the edges around the quilt so that the quilt is square.

15. Binding:

    1. Cut several 2 1/2” strips across the width of the white fabric for the binding. Piece the sections together to form one long continuous strip.

    2. Fold the wrong sides together along the long edge and press.

    3. On one of the short ends fold in at a 45° angle and press.

    4. Place the raw edge of the binding along the outer edge of the quilt starting 6” from the top corner and pin in place.

    5. Using a 1/4” seam allowance start to sew 4” from the top edge of the binding and continue down the first side of the quilt.

    6. Stop when you are ¼” from the corner and backstitch. Cut the thread.

    7. Remove the quilt from the machine. Fold the binding up and then down over the second side of the quilt so that the raw edges are even to create a 45˚ corner.

    8. Pin in place and sew the second side of the quilt. Stop 1/4” from the second corner; backstitch and cut the thread.

    9. When you turn the last corner trim the end on the binding so that it overlaps past the starting point on the binding.

    10. Tuck the binding inside the beginning point of the binding and sew in place.

    11. Press the binding to the back of the quilt.

    12. To finish your quilt hand-sew the binding to the backside of the quilt.
