Materials:

  • 1 Yard plaid fabric
  • 1/3 Yard black felted wool
  • Felted wool scraps - red green gold
  • Stabilizer - Tear Away
  • Steam-a-Seam 2
  • 1 Spool sewing thread to match fabric
  • 1 Spool decorative thread such as Monet Jeans Stitch or 12 wt. cotton thread in gold
  • Top stitch needle
  • Printable patterns attached (stocking pattern is at 50%)

Tools:

  • Baby Lock Sewing Machine

Steps:

  1. Purchase felted wool if possible.

    1. Sometimes quilt shops will have scraps of wool that they have already felted. If you can't find felted wool it's easy to do. Purchase 100% wool for the best results.

    2. Boil the wool in boiling water for about fifteen minutes and dry in a hot dryer. Boil the different colors separately because the wool will fade.

  2. Trace the pattern shapes onto the Steam-a-Seam 2 as shown on the pattern. Fuse these onto the wool cut out the pieces and lay aside.

  3. Trace the stocking front onto the plaid fabric.

    1. Do NOT cut out the stocking front at this time. Draw a rectangle around the stocking about two inches from the edges and cut out the rectangle. This will make it easier to applique.

  4. Place the black stocking applique piece on the plaid stocking piece as shown on pattern and fuse in place (fuse from the backside of the stocking).

  5. Select shell tuck edge stitch.

    1. Change the stitch width to 7.0 and the stitch length to 3.0. Insert the topstitch needle and thread the machine with the gold thread on top and sewing thread in the bobbin.

  6. Place a piece of tear away stabilizer under the entire stocking and applique the black felted wool onto the plaid stocking front.

  7. For the black circles use the holly circles template to cut your circles. For the red circles use a circle but double in size from that. Fuse the black circles on top of the red circles.

    1. Place the design pieces on the black wool as desired and fuse in place. Change the stitch width to 5.0 and the stitch length to 1.8. Applique the pieces in place.

    2. Draw the star trail and stitch with a straight stitch. Select a decorative star stitch use a single repeat of the pattern and place stars around the top of the stocking.

    3. Tear away the stabilizer.

  8. Cut out the stocking front making sure that there is 1 1/4" of the plaid fabric showing around the sides and bottom of the black wool.

  9. Cut the stocking back and lining from the plaid fabric.

  10. Cut a rectangle of the plaid fabric measuring 7" x 17". Fold this piece in quarters and press; this is the cuff. Open this piece and lay flat right side up on the table.

    1. Place the holly and berries in the top right corner as on the stocking picture; fuse and applique in place. Allow for a 1/2" seam allowance on the top and sides.

    2. Place a piece of tear away stabilizer under the applique and repeat stitches in step 7. Draw the veins on the holly leaf and straight stitch.

  11. Cut a 1 1/4" x 5" strip of plaid fabric.

    1. Fold in half lengthwise and press. Fold the lengthwise raw edges to the inside; crease and press. This is the tab for hanging the stocking.

    2. Thread the machine with sewing thread. Sew close to each edge of this strip.

  12. Lay the stocking front and back right sides together and stitch together with a 1/4" seam allowance leaving the top edge open. Clip curves and turn stocking right side out. Press.

  13. Sew the stocking lining right sides together leaving the top open. Do NOT turn.

    1. TIP: Sew a 1/2" seam on the lining tapering to a 1/4" seam at the top edges. This will make the stocking lay flatter. Trim close to the seam.

  14. Place the lining inside the stocking matching seams and baste the top edges together.

  15. Fold the hanging tab in half. Place the tab parallel to the back seam in the top left corner raw edges together and pin in place.

  16. For easier sewing turn the stocking wrong side out. Place the cuff over the stocking top matching the cuff seam to the back seam of the stocking.

    1. Keep the raw edges of the cuff and stocking together. Stitch the raw edges together with a 1/2" seam allowance. Finish the raw edges with a zigzag stitch if desired.

  17. Turn the stocking right side out. Fold the cuff down over the stocking and press.

  18. Design Idea: Try using the Baby Lock Embellisher to apply the appliques to your stocking. The embellisher is easy to use and requires no threading!
