Spend your winter nights relaxing in style this holiday by creating a festive Mug Rug and Cup Koozie. Enjoy the traditions of watching favorite movies drinking hot chocolate and spending time with family and friends. Make for yourself or as unique hand-made holiday gifts! These are both great scrap fabric buster projects that could fill any stocking!

Mug Rug Supplies

  • Baby Lock Chorus or Ballad Machine or Baby Lock Sewing Machine
  • Digital Dual Foot
    • Open Toe Foot for Digital Dual Feed
  • ¼” Piecing Foot with Guide (BLSA-QFG)
  • Variety of Flannel Fabrics cut as follows:
    • 5”x6” piece of flannel print (include ½”x2 ½” tab bottom center)2- 2”x6” flannel print
    • 2- 1”x6” flannel print *1 ½” square flannel- cut in ½ diagonally2 ½” square
  • flannel- cut in ½ diagonally3”
  • square flannel- cut in ½
  • diagonally 11”x6” batting
    • 11”x6” backing fabric (include ½”x2 ½” tab bottom center)1” square (tree trunk)
  • Coordinating Madeira embroidery thread
  • Rotary Cutter/Mat/Ruler
  • Iron and Pressing Mat
  • Spray starch (if desired)
  • Temporary Spray Adhesive
  • Fabric Marking Pen

Cup Koozie Supplies

  • Baby Lock Chorus or Ballad Machine or Baby Lock Sewing Machine
  • ¼” Piecing Foot with Guide (BLSA-QFG)
  • Variety of Flannel Fabrics cut as follows:
    • 12 Flannel fabric strips 1 ½”x 4”
    • Backing fabric 4”x18”
    • Batting 4”x18”
  • Hair band or 3” piece of thin elastic
  • Button
  • Awl
  • Thread Snips
  • Coordinating Madeira embroidery thread
  • Rotary Cutter/Mat/Ruler
  • Iron and Pressing Mat
  • Spray Starch

Tree Applique Instructions

  1. Using 5”x6” center fabric mark center points 2 ½” from each side
  2. Mark 1 ½” from bottom of fabric (not to include tab)
  3. Gather all three triangles for tree and spray wrong side of fabric with spray adhesive
  4. Mark center point of each triangle
  5. Place large triangle (3”) centered on mark 1 ½” from bottom of fabric
  6. Place medium sized (2”) triangle centered and overlapping large triangle by ½’ inch
  7. Place small triangle (1”) centered and overlapping medium triangle by ½”
  8. Place base of tree (trunk) beneath and abutting bottom triangle
  9. Using the Digital Dual Feed foot blanket stitch around all triangles with coordinating thread
  10. Stitch 2” strips to both sides of 1” strips (front of mug rug complete)
  11. Blanket stitch in ditch all strip seams

Mug Rug Assembly Instructions

  1. Attach batting to wrong side of front of mug rug using spray adhesive
  2. Place right side of top fabric to right side of back fabric
  3. Straight stitch mug rug together with ¼” seam allowance using piecing foot with guide *Do not stitch tabs (leave open to turn mug rug right side out)
  4. Turn right side out using awl to gently push corners out
  5. Fold tabs inside mug rug making them even with bottom of mug rug and pin or clip to secure

Cup Koozie Instructions

  1. Stitch all 1 ½” strips together using ¼” piecing foot (vary fabrics throughout)
  2. Spray starch and press seams flat
  3. Using template trim front fabric and back fabric to size
  4. Place elastic between fabric pinching center of hair band together in the center. Half of elastic will be inside sewn koozie the other half hangs outside koozie (to be trimmed off after sewn)
  5. Place front and back of fabric right sides together
  6. Straight stitch around entire koozie leaving 2” open
  7. Trim excess hair band/elastic flat with side
  8. Turn koozie right side out using awl
  9. Top stitch around koozie using ¼” seam allowance with coordinating thread
  10. Place/hold koozie around cup to be used and mark spot where elastic will wrap around button
  11. Hand stitch button to koozie
