Skill Level: Beginner

Created By: Milinda Jay Stephenson, Baby Lock Educator

Instructions:

Prepare and Hoop your Fabric:

1. Using a straight edge, mark a straight line across the edge of the sheet or pillow case where the border would be embroidered.

2. Cut a piece of Tear-away stabilizer for the 8” X 12” hoop.

3. Use spray adhesive to adhere project to Tear Away Cotton Soft Stabilizer

*Note: it’s easiest if you go ahead and prepare stabilizer and adhere it to the entire section of the project you wish to embroider rather than recutting stabilizer for each hooping)

4. Begin hooping at the right end of project.  For this project, we are going to work from the right towards the left.

Creating the Design:

For this project, we will take advantage of the pattern repeat feature to create a border.  When working with borders, there is some math involved.  See the Border Formula Worksheet Included at the end of the project for help in determining placement and number of design repeats needed.

1. From the main screen on the Capella, choose Exclusives, Variety and Gingko Leaf.  Touch Set.

2. Select Size and resize the design based on your calculation.  The Capella can resize your design up 20% and down 10%.  Resize the design to 2.64 x 3.54.  Touch OK.

3. Once sized, move the design to the right side of screen.

4. Select the Pattern Repeat key.

5. Choose the option to add design horizontally.

6. Click the key to add three more designs to create a border of 3 or 4 depending on your calculations.

7. Touch OK.

8. Using the Move Keys, select the center dot on the move keys to center the design.

9. Touch Embroidery

10. To place the design, we will use the Two-Point Placement.

11. Using the placement marking on your fabric hooped fabric, select the Two- Point Placement key

12. Gather the hooped fabric with the marked line.

13. Touch the crosshair placement mark.

14. Touch Ok.

15. Select the right center mark to align.

16. Touch Next.

17. Select the far-left arrow for alignment direction.

18. Touch Next.

19. Use the arrow keys to center your cross hair on the right end of the placement line you’ve marked on your fabric

20. Touch next

21. Follow the on-screen instructions to center your cross hair on the left end of the placement line visible in your hoop.

22. Embroider your piece.

23. Follow the instructions above for the next section. Continue until you’ve completed embroidering your border.

Border Formula:

1. Measure the height and width of the area where you will stitch your border.

2. Record the width of your border design section: ________________

Compare this number to the width of the area. Will your design fit?

3. Record the height of your border design section: ________________

4. Divide the measurement of the area by the height: _____________ = the number of sections needed to fill that area

5. Multiply the number of sections needed to fill the area x the height of the border design ___________

6. Subtract this number from the height of the finished area where the border will be stitched: __________

7. Divide this number by 2: _____________; this amount will be measured from the seam to designate the initial needle drop position.

Here is an Example:

Measure the height and width of the area where you will stitch your border.

19.5” x 4”

Record the width of your border design section: 2:01”

Compare this number to the width of the area. Will your design fit?

Record the height of your border design section: 4.82”

Divide the height of the area by the height of the design: 4 = the number of sections needed to fill that area

Multiply the number of sections needed to fill the area x the height of the border design:

4 x 4.82 = 19.28”

Subtract this number from the height of the finished area where the border will be stitched:

19.5 – 19.28 = .22 round up to .25 or ¼”

Divide this number by 2: 1/8” This amount will be measured from the seam to designate the initial needle drop position.
