Categories: General, Projects, News

Want to make a difference using your sewing talents? Try sewing for charity! Baby Lock is all about the love of sewing and one of the ways we show that love is by sewing for others. Check out some of the organizations Baby Lock has supported and the projects they’re looking for to help give back.

SEW POWERFUL

Sew a purse, change a life! Sew Powerful’s mission is to help combat extreme poverty through sewing and tailoring. Create a purse using their free pattern and write a special note to leave inside the purse. These purses empower girls to stay in school all month, improve their academic performance and move onto secondary school. Their efforts focus in Lusaka Zambia where they equip community members with jobs, training tools and technical skills to make purposeful products.

RYAN'S CASE FOR SMILES

Ryan’s Case for Smiles collects home-sewn pillowcases featuring fun prints and patterns to distribute to kids facing long hospital stays. These pillowcases provide comfort during this hard time and remind them that they are not defined by their illness. For those interested in creating a pillowcase for Ryan’s Case for Smiles, a pattern and instructions are provided on their website.

LITTLE DRESSES FOR AFRICA

Little Dresses for Africa provides pillowcase dresses and britches for vulnerable children living in Africa. The clothing is given to these children along with education about clean water, sanitation and overall personal and community health. Those who receive and wear the clothing serve as ambassadors in their communities to promote these initiatives. Check out the free patterns on their website to get started sewing.

QUILTS OF VALOR

For quilters wanting to create something meaningful for veterans, Quilts of Valor is a great organization. Quilts are awarded to veterans for their service to the United States. The quilts are made with a patriotic theme and are given to veterans from all branches of military. Learn full details about how to create a Quilt of Valor on their website.

AMERICAN PATCHWORK & QUILTING 1 MILLION PILLOWCASE CHALLENGE

APQ recently reached its goal of sewing 1 Million Pillowcases for charity. While their challenge is complete, there is always a need for pillowcases to be donated to various organizations in need. A list of organizations and several different pillowcase patterns can be found on their website. Learn more and start making a pillowcase today!

OPERATION SMILE

Another quick sew project perfect for anyone is creating a fabric drawstring bag for Operation Smile to help children around the world born with cleft palates. Amy Smart shared a pattern for a cute heart block bag on her blog, Diary of a Quilter. The bags are given to Operation Smile’s patients after their surgeries and are filled with small personal care items and toys, along with a mirror to see their new smile.

CAMISOLES

Looking to provide comfort to someone facing breast cancer? Melissa Mora of Melly Sews works with a local organization in her area, Crafting Comfort, to create post-surgery camisoles for mastectomies and other torso surgeries to help patients heal in comfort. Patterns are available to download for a name-your-price purchase.

COLLECTIVE THREAD

Collective Thread strives to create stronger communities through training and work. Located near Tacony’s headquarters in St. Louis, MO, they use Baby Lock machines to teach immigrant and refugees sewing skills to empower and prepare them for employment opportunities in the area. Their local work also helps fund similar programs in East Africa.

There are many ways we can make a difference in our communities through sewing. In addition to supporting the above organizations, Baby Lock has also donated numerous sewing machines and notions to various organizations such as schools, youth sewing programs, community sewing workshops benefiting those in need, cancer support organizations, low income housing organizations, and more. Members of our team have also donated many hours of their time by teaching others to sew. So whether you're interested in sewing a project mentioned above, donating your time or finding a local organization to support in your area, join as as we make a difference in the lives of others through sewing.

DONATION REQUEST

Baby Lock and its parent company Tacony Corporation value the opportunities to partner with organizations and events across the country. Please submit your donation request via this form and we’ll review as soon as possible. Please note that some local and regional requests may be submitted to local authorized Baby Lock retailers.
