Create an Easy-sew Summer Top Using a Serger!

Baby Lock Ambassador Diana of Eloise.Ezra shares another fashionable but easy sewing project!

The Athina Top by Tessuti Patterns is a fun, super easy to sew, oversized top that will be perfect for any season. In this tutorial, we'll walk you through the process of sewing the Athina Top using a Baby Lock Accolade serger, emphasizing the use of the safety stitch for secure and professional finishes.

Materials You'll Need
Fabric: Approximately 1.5 to 2 yards of light to medium-weight woven fabric, such as linen or cotton.

Notions: Thread matching your fabric color, 25cm x
25cm tear-away Vilene (optional for neckline)
Tools: Scissors, pins or clips, and an iron.

Step 1: Prepare Your Pattern and Fabric
1. Download and Print: Get the free Athina Top pattern from Tessuti Patterns.
2. Cut Fabric Pieces:
* Front: Cut 1 on fold
* Back: Cut 1 on fold
* Sleeves: Cut 2
* Neckline Facing: Cut 1 for front and 1 for back (optional)

Step 2: Assemble the Shoulder Seams
1. Align Pieces: Place the front and back pieces right sides together, aligning the shoulder edges.
2. Sew Seams: Using your Baby Lock Accolade, set it to a 4-thread safety stitch. This stitch provides both overlocking and a straight seam, ensuring durability.

 Step 3: Attach the Sleeves
1. Match Centers: Align the center of each sleeve with the shoulder seam.
2. Pin and Sew: Pin the sleeves in place and sew them using the 4-thread safety stitch.

Step 4: Construct the Side Seams
1. Align Sides: With right sides together, pin the side seams from the hem to the underarm.
2. Sew Seams: Using the 4-thread safety stitch, sew the side seams.

Step 5: Prepare the Neckline Binding
1. Measure Binding: Measure the binding to make sure it will fit the neck area.
2. Sew Seam: Using a sewing machine, sew the short raw edges of the binding together.

Step 6: Attach the Neckline Binding
1. Pin Binding: With right sides together, pin the neckline binding to the top of the neckline.
2. Sew Binding: Using a straight stitch on your sewing machine, sew the binding to the
neckline.
3. Understitch: Fold the binding towards the wrong side and understitch.
4. Topstitch: Fold Binding towards the inside and topstitch.

Step 7: Hem the Top and Sleeves
1. Press Hems: Turn the hem 1⁄4 inch towards the wrong side, then turn another 1⁄4 inch and
press.
2. Sew Hems: Sew hems in place using a straight stitch on your sewing machine. I am using
my Babylock Jubilant.
4. Press: Press the hems for a crisp finish.

Final Tips
Fabric Choice: Opt for light to medium-weight woven fabrics like linen or cotton for the best results.
Pressing: Press seams and hems as you go to maintain a professional finish.
