Supplies

  • Baby Lock Serger
  • One medium size lamp shade (9” wide on top x 11” wide on bottom x 9” tall)
  • ⅛ yard of 10 different fabrics or scraps that you might have
  • Three spools of thread
  • Two yards Extra Wide Double Fold Bias Tape
  • Nine 1” Pompoms (can be purchased by the yard on a roll)
  • Eighteen tiny tassels (can be purchased by the yard on a roll)
  • 3 yards Trellis yarn
  • Wonder Clips
  • Fabric marker
  • Bamboo Stiletto
  • Iron and iron mat
  • Hot glue gun with glue

Instructions

  1. We will be creating 9 strips in 5 different styles. Use all 5 styles or choose the ones you like the best. Use the Stiletto and the wonder clips to hold your fabrics in place as you sew.

a. Style 1 -

  • Cut 2 strips 3” x 9 ¼” from one fabric. Place them wrong sides together. Sew the 9 ¼” sides with a Narrow 3 Thread Overlock.
  • Cut 1 strip 1” x 9” from another fabric. Sew both 9” sides with a Rolled Edge.
  • Place the 1” strip in the center of the 3” strip. Line up the raw edges of both strips on the top and bottom. Serge the top and bottom only with a Narrow 3 Thread Overlock.

b. Style 2 -

  • Cut 2 strips 3” x 9 ¼” from one fabric. Place them wrong sides together. Sew the 9 ¼” sides with a Narrow 3 Thread Overlock.
  • Cut 1 strip 2” x 9 ¼” from another fabric. Serge the 9 ¼” sides with a Narrow 3 Thread Overlock.
  • Fold the 2” strip in half with right sides together so it measures 1” x 9”. Set your machine up for a 2 Thread Flatlock-Wide. Carefully follow the thread path on the Quick Reference Threading Guide. Serge with the fold of the fabric lined up with the O2 needle guide on the foot. Open the 2” strip. Press flat.
  • Place the 2” strip in the center of the 3” strip. Line up the raw edges of both strips on the top and bottom. Serge the top and bottom only with a Narrow 3 Thread Overlock.

c. Style 3 -

  • Cut 2 strips 3” x 9 ¼” from one fabric. Place them wrong sides together. Sew the 9 ¼” sides with a Narrow 3 Thread Overlock.
  • Cut 1 strip 2” x 9” from another fabric. Serge the 9” sides with a Narrow 3 Thread Overlock.
  • Fold ¼” to the wrong side along both 9” sides. Press. Bring those folds to the center on the right side. Press.
  • Place the 2” strip in the center of the 3” strip. Line up the raw edges of both strips on the top and bottom. Serge the top and bottom only with a Narrow 3 Thread Overlock.

d. Style 4 -

  • Cut 1 strip 1” x 9” from another fabric. Serge the 9” sides with a Rolled Edge.
  • Place the 2” strip in the center of the 3” strip. Place the 1” strip in the center of the 2” strip. Line up the raw edges of all three strips on the top and bottom. Serge the top and bottom only with a Narrow 3 Thread Overlock.

e. Style 5 -

  • Place the 2” strip in the center of the 3” strip. Line up the raw edges of both strips on the top and bottom. Serge the top and bottom only with a Narrow 3 Thread Overlock.
  1. Make small marks around the top of the shade at 3 ¼” intervals.
  2. Make small marks around the bottom of the shade at 3 ⅞” intervals. Make sure the marks at the bottom line up with the marks at the top.
  3. Center a strip over one of the marks at the top. Glue in place.
  4. Center the bottom of the strip over the mark at the bottom. Make sure the strips are straight along the side of the shade. Glue in place. The strips are a little longer than the shade. That is ok. We need the extra in the middle to pull them together.
  5. Repeat until there are 9 strips glued to the shade.
  6. Fold the bias tape over the top edge of the shade. Glue in place.
  7. Repeat with the bottom edge of the shade.
  8. Tie the centers of the strips together in various heights with the trellis yarn.
  9. Sew or glue a pompom and two tassels to each place where you tied the yarn.
