The best of both worlds, embroidery and quilting! This modern quilt was created on the Baby Lock Aurora, featuring the built-in embroidery designs and a decorative stitch that was used for the quilting.

Preparations
From the Baby Lock Tear-Away Stabilizer:
From the Tula Pink Linework Paper White, Fabric A, ¾ yard, cut the following:
- 1 piece 2.5” x 2.5”
- 4 pieces 8” x 8”
- 2 pieces 12.5” x 2.5”
- 2 pieces 18.5” x 2.5”
- 1 piece 26.5” x 2.5”
- 1 piece 28.5” x 2.5”
- 1 piece 4.5” x 2.5”
From the Tula Pink Linework Ink Black, Fabric B, ¾ yard, cut the following:
- 9 pieces 2.5” x 2.5”
- 1 piece 4.5” x 2.5”
- 2 pieces 12.5” x 2.5”
- 2 pieces 18.5” x 2.5”
- 1 piece 26.5” x 2.5”
- 1 piece 28.5” x 2.5”
- 2 pieces 36.5” x 2”
From the Tula Pink Linework Mineral Paper, Fabric C, 1 ½ yard, cut the following:
- 9 pieces 2.5” x 2.5”
- 1 piece 4.5” x 2.5”
- 2 pieces 12.5” x 2.5”
- 2 pieces 18.5” x 2.5”
- 1 piece 26.5” x 2.5”
- 1 piece 28.5” x 2.5”
- 2 pieces 32.5” x 1.5”
- 2 pieces 36.5” x 1.5”
- 1 piece 36” x WOF for backing
From the Moda Grunge Red, Fabric D, ¼ yard, cut the following:
Instructions
Embroidery:
- Layer the 8”x8” Fabric A on top of stabilizer, and hoop, centering both layers.
- Press the Embroidery Icon, then press Exclusive, then press Freehand.
- Stitch out 2 of Design 003 and 2 of Design 004, creating a total of 4 units; using the Madeira Red Rayon Embroidery Thread.
- Using a 6.5” x 6.5” square ruler, center the design under the ruler and trim excess fabric leaving you a 6.5” x 6.5” embroidered square. Repeat for all 4 of the units.
Piecing:
- Take 2 each of Fabric B and C, 2.5” x 2.5” and place on the embroidered unit’s corners.
- Sew Diagonally Corner to Corner of the 2.5” x 2.5” square, creating a half square triangle in each of the 4 corners of the embroidered block.
- Trim ¼” from seam, press open. Repeat for remaining blocks.
- With the remaining 2.5” squares from Fabrics A, B, and C, sew them together creating a unit that measures 6.5” x 2.5”. Make 1 unit.
- Sew the 4.5” x 2.5” rectangles together, from Fabrics A, B, and C, along the 4.5” length, resulting in a unit that measures 4.5” x 6.5”. Make 1 unit.
- Sew the 12.5” x 2.5” strips together from Fabrics A, B, and C, along the 12.5” length, resulting in a unit that measures 12.5” x 6.5”. Make 2 units.
- Sew the 18.5” x 2.5” strips together from Fabrics A, B, and C, along the 18.5” length, resulting in a unit that measures 18.5” x 6.5”. Make 2 units.
- Sew the 26.5” x 2.5” strips together from Fabrics A, B, and C, along the 26.5” length, resulting in a unit that measures 26.5” x 6.5”. Make 1 unit.
- Sew the 28.5” x 2.5” strips together from Fabrics A, B, and C, along the 28.5” length, resulting in a unit that measures 28.5” x 6.5”. Make 1 unit.
Next, we are going to create 4 large units.
- Sew 12.5” x 6.5” to the top of one of the embroidered 6.5” x 6.5”, and then sew 18.5” x 6.5” unit to the bottom of embroidered unit. This unit should measure 36.5” x 6.5”. Make 1 unit (A).
- Sew 26.5” x 6.5” to the top of one of the embroidered 6.5” x 6.5”, and then sew 4.5” x 6.5” unit to the bottom of embroidered unit. This unit should measure 36.5” x 6.5”. Make 1 unit (B).
- Sew 2.5” x 6.5” to the top of one of the embroidered 6.5” x 6.5”, and then sew 28.5” x 6.5” unit to the bottom of embroidered unit. This unit should measure 36.5” x 6.5”. Make 1 unit (C).
- Sew 18.5” x 6.5” to the top of one of the embroidered 6.5” x 6.5”, and then sew 12.5” x 6.5” unit to the bottom of embroidered unit. This unit should measure 36.5” x 6.5”. Make 1 unit (D).
Assemble as follows, from left to right:
- Grey, 36.5” x 1.5”
- Black, 36.5” x 2”
- Unit A, 36.5” x 6.5”
- Red, 36.5” x 1.5”
- Unit B, 36.5” x 6.5”
- Red, 36.5” x 1.5”
- Unit C, 36.5” x 6.5”
- Red, 36.5” x 1.5”
- Unit D, 36.5” x 6.5”
- Black, 36.5” x 2”
- Grey, 36.5” x 1.5”
Then Add Grey 32.5” x 1.5” to top and bottom.
Quilt Top is complete. Layer backing, batting and top, quilt with a walking foot in the ditch (over seamlines) with a decorative stitch. I used the Serpentine Stitch #2-17, 5mm width x 1mm length. Bind quilt with Grey Mineral.
