As your children grow it becomes hard to find clothes for girls when they hit the early teen years. They want something a bit more grown up than kid’s clothes but not quite ready to leap into the teen section of the department stores. Create this skirt for a perfect fit every time! Materials:

  • Simplicity pattern #8106
  • 2 different coordinating fabrics
  • Madeira Cotona sewing thread to match the fabric
  • Ribbon to coordinate with fabrics for bottom edge of skirt
  • Basic sewing supplies

Steps:

  1. Follow the guide sheet from the pattern to layout and cut out the pattern pieces according to the desired size for your young girl.

    1. Use the coordinating fabric for the bottom edge of the skirt.

  2. Set up the sewing machine. (Be sure to read the instruction book before you begin to sew.)

    1. Wind a bobbin with the same color thread that will be used for the top thread.

    2. Place the bobbin in the bobbin case. (Refer to the instruction book for winding the bobbin and inserting the bobbin in the bobbin case.)

    3. Thread the machine.

    4. Snap on the Zig-Zag foot.

    5. Select the straight stitch (A) on the selector dial.

    6. Set the stitch length to 2.

    7. To a test sew for stitch and tension accuracy as shown on page 24 of the manual.

  3. To sew a 5/8” seam allowance review to Page 28 in the sewing machine manual for the markings on the cover plate.

  4. Follow the guide sheet for sewing the skirt together.

  5. Pin the ribbon over the bottom horizontal seam line. Stitch along both sides of the ribbon using a straight stitch.

    1. Or as an option use one of the zig zag or decorative built-in stitches.

  6. Turn up the hem to the back side of the skirt and stitch ¼” from the edge using a straight stitch.
