Scrap Happy Quilted Coasters
Looking for a pretty place to set your drink? Sew some adorable fabric coasters with your favorite fabrics! This free Scrap Happy Quilted Coasters project is perfect for beginners and it will help you use up your scraps! Using half-square triangles in a variety of prints, you can sew up a cute housewarming gift for someone you love.
Finished project size: 4.25” x 4.25”
Materials:
3” fabric squares (need 4 different squares per coaster)
5.5” square backing fabric per coaster
5.5” square Insul Bright Batting per coaster
4.5” diameter circle to trace
Cutting mat, rotary cutter, ruler
Baby Lock Quilting Machine
Cutting:
Cut each 3” fabric square once diagonally
Directions
1. Lay out 8 triangles for each coaster as pictured, or in any arrangement you like. Sew together adjacent triangles to make 4 half-square triangle units. Sew together the squares in each row and press the seams open. Sew together the rows.
2. Cut each block into a 4.5”-diameter circle shape using a rotary cutter and round object to trace.
3. Place the patchwork circle on top of the Insul Bright batting. Quilt as desired.
4. Trim off the excess batting.
5. Place the trimmed and quilted coaster top rights sides together with the backing fabric. Sew together with a 3/16” seam allowance, leaving a 2” gap for turning. Trim off the excess backing fabric.
6. Turn the coaster right side out through the turning gap and use your fingers to smooth out the edges. Insert the raw edges inside the opening and clip or pin to close.
7. Topstitch 3/16” from the edge just inside the perimeter, closing the gap as you sew.
We hope you enjoy using your new Scrap Happy Quilted Coasters! If you tend to have small fabric scraps leftover from quilts, this project will give you the satisfaction of turning them into something brand new.
