Valentine's Hearts Cosmetics Pouch

Baby Lock Educator Cassie Cartmell of Faodail Creation shares this sew-sweet cosmetics bag project. Cassie's bag is faux leather with rose gold hardware- she even made sure the zipper was a heart! We suggest making them in different shades for all of your Valentines, and stuffing them with makeup, candy, or other small gifts! We added some cute sewing items to ours, but it's cute enough to use as a clutch.

Supplies Needed

Baby Lock sewing machine, Cassie used the Soprano

Vinyl / faux leather fabric ½ yard (depending on width you have available)

Canvas Fabric ¼ yard

Cotton ½ yard

11” Zipper / I use #5 zipper tape

Quilt Batting (use your scraps or ½ yard)

Adhesive fabric spray

#8 perle cotton thread

¼” foot with guide

Decorative Stitch / Monogram foot “N”

regular “J” foot

Cording foot – 3 cord

Cutting Instructions

Cut the following:

Cut two Top of Pouch 3 ½ ” x 11” x 2 out of canvas

Cut two Bottom of Pouch 4 ½” x 11” out of faux leather

Cut two Lining 8” x 11” x 2 out of cotton

Cut 2 8” x 11” x 2 out of quilt batting

Cut four Zipper tabs 1 ¼  ” x 2”

Cut two applique vinyl hearts from template below.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Using the ¼” foot with guide and the Piecing Stich (middle) on your Baby Lock Sewing Machine stitch together both top canvas section and bottom vinyl section together with a quarter of an inch
  2. Attach the batting to the back of the two sections with adhesive fabric spray
  3. Cut out and attach the applique hearts to one of the sections, you can use adhesive fabric spray to keep these secure.
  4. Use a Blanket Stitch and the Decorative Stitch / Monogram foot “N” to sew the hearts into place
  5. At the bottom of every section draw out a square that is 1 ½” and cut each out.
  6. Cut zipper down to 10”
  7. Using the regular “J” foot attach the zipper tabs. Sandwich each tab between the zipper and sew the end ¼” with a regular straight stitch.  Fold back and top stitch.  Cut off each end of the zipper tabs so they are 1” and the whole length of the zipper should be 11” total.
  8. To add some extra detail to the pouch I attached the Cording foot – 3 cord set my sewing machine to a zigzag 5.0mm width and threaded #8 perle cotton thread. I used the seam as a guide and sewed along the pouch.
  9. Sewing the zipper, place the front vinyl side top of the right side of the zipper and the lining side will be right sides facing the back of the zipper. Basically all three layers are sandwiched together.  Stitch into place.
  10. Flip the layers back on themselves and top stitch
  11. Then place the vinyl section fabric side down over the zipper facing up and the lining fabric to be right sides up and sew straight down attaching all three layers into place.
  12. Flip the layers back on themselves and top stitch
  13. Make sure your ZIPPER IS OPEN. Bring together the two vinyl sections right sides facing and your two lining sections right sides facing. Sew around the pouch leaving THE SQUARES and 2 ½ “ OF THE BOTTOM OF THE LINING unsewn.  Using clips clip into place, make sure everything is lined up then sew.
  14. Sew the boxed corners by opening out the center and lining up the two seams. Stitch into place and do again with the other three corners.
  15. Turn your pouch right sides out and close up the lining and push through into the bag.
