Spider Web Embroidered Jeans Upcycle

Hello everyone!! I hope that all is well with you. As a parent, there's something truly special about sewing for your children. From the moment my kiddos were younger, about 3 and 4 years old, I've taken great joy in sewing clothes, costumes, and cherished keepsakes for them. Now, as they grow older, one of my favorite traditions is working on creative projects that not only express their unique personalities but also strengthen our bond. This Halloween season, I am excited to embark on an embroidery adventure, transforming a pair of thrifted jeans into a spooktacular masterpiece for her. This project is inspired by my  daughter's love for Halloween and Spiderman. Join me on this embroidery journey as I take you through the process of creating Spider web embroidered lace jeans pants.

1. Choose Your Design

Select a spider web embroidery design pattern that you like (I purchased mine from Etsy). Ensure it's suitable for lacework, with delicate lines and open spaces.

2: Prepare Your Stabilizer

Hoop your chosen fabric tightly in an embroidery hoop. Be gentle to avoid damaging the material.

3. Load Your Embroidery Machine

  • I really love my Baby Lock Bloom. Loading my design onto the machine was so easy. I downloaded the design file on my hard drive, turned on the machine, clicked on the pocket symbol, then chose the file that the design was under.
  • Load the spider web design onto the machine and thread it with matching embroidery thread. Make sure to wind the bobbin with matching bobbin thread.
  • Lastly, I edited the sizing and placement on the machine, pressed the start button, and viola, it’s ready to embroider.

4. Begin Embroidering

Start the embroidery machine, following the design pattern. It will begin stitching the spider web onto the water-soluble stabilizer.

. Dissolve the Stabilizer

●      Once you've completed the embroidery, carefully cut away any excess stabilizer, leaving a border around your design.

●      Fill a spray bottle with lukewarm water or turn your faucet on warm, and mist the stabilizer. You'll notice it starting to dissolve.

●      Continue wetting and gently dabbing with a clean, dry cloth to remove the stabilizer entirely. The warmer the water, the faster it will dissolve.

6. Dry your Embroidery

Allow your lace embroidery to air dry completely before proceeding.

7. Decide on the Placement of the Webs

●      After your lace embroidery is dry, lay your pant leg out and decide where the spiderweb will be placed.

●      Lay web on pants and mark the distance you desire between each web. I separated each web by 3 inches.

●      Draw a circle the circumference of the points on the web onto the pants. I drew four circles from the starting point of the design to the end point.

8. Cut and Stitch Your Web Over the Circle by Hand

●      After you have cut and laid your webs over the circles you’ve cut out on the pant legs, stitch them in place by hand. My daughter wanted the frayed look under the web, so I did not fold under and top stitch around the circles before placing the webs, but that is up to you.

●      You will then hand stitch the web onto the pant leg. I hand stitched at each point on the web to keep it in place.

●      If you do not want to hand stitch, you will need to open the inseam of the pants and stitch around the web with your sewing machine.

I am so glad that my daughter loves the end result of her jeans pants, because as you know, teenagers are difficult to please!! Creating this embroidered lace with a spider web design using water-soluble stabilizer required me to be patient and precise, but the end result is an intricate piece of artwork that can add a touch of personality to your projects. Enjoy the creative process, and I hope that you have fun crafting with this unique technique.
